Day One Report
Centurion Steven Croft and Haseeb Hameed led the way for Lancashire as they reached 290-7 at close on day one of their three-day friendly against Cambridge MCC Universities at Fenner’s today.
Opener Hameed’s 59 off 114 balls ensured an encouraging start for the Red Rose, who won the toss, as they reached 105-2 in the early stages of the afternoon.
When Hameed was bowled by the left-arm spin of Josh Arksey, captain Croft came in and posted what will hopefully be the first of many centuries in 2016.
Croft hit 13 fours in a 144-ball 103 not out, with his innings halted by bad light, which wiped out the last 40 minutes of play.
Hameed shared 34 and 44 for the first two wickets with opening partner Karl Brown and Luke Procter.
Brown was caught behind off Connor Emerton before Procter was caught at first slip off new ball seamer Adam Barton, leaving the score at 78-2 in the 27th.
Hameed reached 50 off 100 balls with eight fours before falling in the 36th over with Lancashire at 105-3.
Luis Reece was next to go, caught at square-leg off Barton’s new ball partner, Alistair Allchin, with the score on 139 in the 43rd over.
Croft led a 68-run stand with Alex Davies (27) for the fifth wicket through the latter stages of the afternoon.
He reached his fifty off 69 balls before seeing Davies fall to Arksey, leaving the score at 207-5 in the 62nd.
Liam Livingstone fell to the same man after tea, lbw sweeping, with Lancashire now 234-6 in the 72nd over.
Jimmy Anderson was bowled by Emerton with 265 on the board before Croft reached his ton off 143 balls with 13 fours just before bad light stopped play at 17.50pm.
Kyle Jarvis, unbeaten on five, will return to the crease with his Blackpool-born captain tomorrow.
