Croft targeting title challenge in 2016

Steven Croft is confident Lancashire can challenge on all three fronts this season.

The Red Rose captain wants the county to retain its Division One status in the Specsavers County Championship, but he is refusing to settle for survival only.

Croft is also targeting further success in the limited overs competitions, the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London one-day Cup.

“In all forms, we’ve got something to play for,” said the all-rounder.

“In the Championship, we want to stay in the division, but not just stay there. We want to compete. There’s not point being in the division if you don’t want to win it.

“We will definitely be out to win it. But if we can’t and we stay in the division, that’s definitely a plus point for us because we’ve failed to do so the last two times we’ve been there.

“We want to go back-to-back in the T20 Blast, and we haven’t been to a Lord’s final for some amount of time. Myself and the team would love to get there.”

Croft was speaking at yesterday’s ECB launch of the new domestic season, which took place at Emirates Old Trafford.

The captain of each of last year’s three winning teams were present; Andrew Gale of Yorkshire and Gareth Roderick of Gloucestershire.

Croft was obviously present after the Lightning won their maiden Blast title last August.

And should they defend their crown this year, Lancashire would become the first county to achieve that feat.

“No one’s ever done it, and that’s a big incentive for us,” said the Blackpool-born star, 31.

“Our record in the competition is really good. We’ve got the most wins domestic wise.

“With getting that first trophy under our belt, hopefully we’ll find it a bit easier to make sure there’s more to come after that.”

Lancashire step up their preparations for the new season with a three-day friendly against Somerset at Taunton Vale, starting on Monday.
