Giles pleased with Somerset performance

Giles pleased with Somerset performance

Lancashire Head Coach and Cricket Director Ashley Giles was pleased with his side's performance after taking a draw from their second Specsavers County Championship fixture against Somerset.

"I think it's been a good four days of cricket," said Giles. "It's been tough. The wicket probably as we expect down here was a good surface. It was a bit against the trend over the last few years when you come down here. I thought when I got our the car (on Sunday), we'd be taking the option to bowl first, but a used wicket and it was dry. It spun a little bit.

"Surfaces down here generally stay in tact, and to bowl a side out twice is generally very difficult.

"Overall, I'm really happy with how we played. There's one thing I've said to the guys, which is 'if we continue to play cricket like we have over the first two matches, then we'll do alright'. I think we've played smart cricket, a determined and disciplined form of cricket. With the ball, we've always stayed disciplined and stayed in the game. I've got no complaints whatsoever.

"To bowl that side out on that sort of wicket would have been pretty special over two days. It didn't happen, but we're in a good spot. We know that looking up and down the division, it's going to be tough. But so far, so good.

"We know it's a strong line-up they have. But we thought, with respect to the rest, if we could get four down, you get into Trego etc, you have a chance.

Giles had particular praise for Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan.

"Kerrigan, I thought, bowled really well. That's good for me to see. He had a lot of control and went past the bat a lot. That happens. On other days, you can go bang, bang, bang and you're well into them. Five down at lunch, it's a different game. But credit to them."
