Virat Kohli inspires India to ODI victory

Virat Kohli inspires India to ODI victory

India v England ODI Review

India captain Virat Kohli contributed to a spectacular run chase during the opening ODI game of the series, after England racked up their highest ever ODI total in India.

England, who were boosted by the return of captain Eoin Morgan following his omission from the Bangladesh tour back in October 2016, were looking to get off to a winning start against India after their 4-0 Test defeat at the end of last year.

After a nervy start for the Three Lions with Alex Hales (9) run out by Jasprit Bumrah, Jason Roy (73) and Joe Root (78) both hit half-centuries, before Ben Stokes (62) hit the fastest ever half-century against India from just 33 balls leading to a late onslaught of 105 runs in the last eight overs to give England their highest ever ODI score in India of 350-7.

England looked confident of taking a 1-0 lead, but similar to the Test series, the magic of India’s captain Virat Kohli proved too much for the Three Lions.

Needing 351 to win, India got off to a difficult start and were only 63-4 after 11 overs with KL Rahul (8), Shikhar Dhawan (1), Yuvraj Singh (15) and MS Dhoni (6) all dismissed – with David Willey at the heart of England’s early successes.

However the emergence of Jadhav, who was making his 13th ODI appearance for the Men in Blue, ignited India’s impressive run chase, combining with Kohli to a 200 run partnership before David Willey once again came to the rescue, catching a rare loose ball to dismiss the captain following a short ball from Ben Stokes.

Kedar Jadhev who was not far behind the captain, left India needing 60 runs from their last 10 overs to complete the turnaround as the hosts cruised to the finish line with 2 overs to spare – the fourth-highest run chase of all time in ODI cricket.

England will look to pick themselves up ahead of the next ODI on Thursday in Cuttack needing a win in this 3 game ODI series.

Kohli and Jadhev partnership

The batting partnership between Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhev was instrumental to the hosts 3 wicket victory after a difficult start to their innings which left then on 63-4.
