Surrey complete routine victory at the Kia Oval

Lancashire, by 10 wickets, lost for the fourth time in 13 Specsavers County Championship matches against Surrey at the Oval today.

The hosts, chasing just 38, wrapped up their third win from their last four Division One matches before lunch on today’s final day to maintain their slim title hopes with two fixtures remaining.

Lancashire began the day on 203-8 in their second innings, leading by 10 runs with Kyle Jarvis and Nathan Buck at the crease.

Buck drove Mark Footitt for four in the third over of the day before falling, caught at second slip, with the next ball as the score fell to 211-9 in the 66th over, a lead of 18. It was Footitt’s sixth wicket of the innings.

Jarvis and Simon Kerrigan took the lead beyond 30 against the likes of Footitt, Gareth Batty and Stuart Meaker.

Footitt then had Jarvis caught at mid-off in the 73rd over to wrap up the innings and finish with a career best haul of 7-62.

Steven Croft employed his trio of spinners, Arron Lilley, Kerrigan and Liam Livingstone, in the Surrey pursuit of 38, with Lilley and Kerrigan taking the new ball.

Rory Burns and Dominic Sibley knocked off the runs inside 10 overs, with Burns finishing with 28 to pass 1,000 Championship runs for the season.

It means that the Red Rose have taken only four points from this match, and they are now without a win in their last eight since beating Surrey at Emirates Old Trafford in May.

With three fixtures remaining, they are now looking over their shoulders at the possibility of a late season battle against relegation.

Should Hampshire draw against Somerset at Taunton later today, the Red Rose will have a 17-point cushion over the Southampton side, who are second bottom.

If Hampshire lose, the gap will be 22 points.
