Mark Chilton to join up with Melbourne Renegades

Mark Chilton to join up with Melbourne Renegades

Chilton to spend winter down under

Chilton has flown out to Australia, where he will link up with Melbourne Renegades to help them throughout the forthcoming Big Bash, starting later this month.

Chilton, who is a good friend of Renegades coach Andrew McDonald, explained: “It’s been talked about for quite some time.

“When Michael Cairns was chairman and Paul Allott was on the board, they were very keen for us to get some coaching experience abroad.

“Quite a few months ago now, I started the wheels in motion.

“I contacted Andrew, who was originally helpful in setting up my placement with Melbourne as a player. They were very receptive and keen.

“We’ll send a coach to see how they do it, and they’ll send a coach back the following summer.

“I’ve got a two-week work experience placement set up, and I’m likely to extend that into the early part of January as well.

Chilton has also been part of the backroom staff with the England squad in the preparation days ahead of the day/night Second Ashes Test in Adelaide.

“On the back of that sorting out the Melbourne deal, I phoned Andrew Strauss and just said ‘Look, I could be over there getting some experience. Would you be happy for me to spend some time around the England group?’

“It will be a pretty exciting few weeks.

“The whole idea in the first place was to go to a different environment and see how other places operate really.

“We do what we think is right for this environment, and Glen (Chapple) has a certain style that we work to.

“But part of my development as a coach is to go and observe how other environments work and see what you can take that you might be able to use for Lancashire’s benefit.

“That’s ultimately what it’s about. It’s about me trying to develop as a coach and to pick ideas up from a different country and competition to bring back to Lancashire to help us become a better team.

“I think it’s a really good concept.

“A six-week trip over Christmas wouldn't have been very popular (with the family) after a six-month cricket season. So I’m going to get my wife and kids out there.

“Eva was actually born in Melbourne, so it’s a chance for her to go back to her homeland so to speak.

“My time, it looks quite busy. But hopefully there will be a few days where we can have a bit of a holiday as well.”

When he arrives in Melbourne, Chilton will be reunited with another of his close friends, Brad Hodge, the former Red Rose overseas player who has just signed with the Renegades.

On the England opportunity, he continued: “That was just a bit extra really.

“I thought ‘While I’m out there, why not create an opportunity just to be around the Ashes’.

“I didn’t know how that was going to be received. But when I spoke to Straussy a few months ago, he was very positive about it.

“He said himself that he’s very keen for English coaches to try and develop themselves, and he mentioned it Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace.

“We’re all aware that they seem happy in England for coaches to come in and be around the group. I certainly got that sense when I spoke to Paul on the phone about it. He seemed very relaxed about it.

“Again, it will just be a case of seeing how England prepare for that game and what they do. I haven't done anything like that here.

“Chappie spent a day with them last season, but I haven't done.”
