In 2009, 40-over League cricket celebrates its 40th anniversary, but it will also be the last season the competition is played by the first-class counties. From next year, the 40-over format will be replaced by a second Twenty20 competition called the P20 the ECB's version of the highly popular Indian Premier League.
Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) has enjoyed plenty of success in the 40-over competition, having won the title five times (1969, 1970, 1989, 1998 and 1999) – with only Essex and Kent equalling this feat.
During its 40-year history, the League has endured many name changes and make-overs but it will also be remembered fondly by Lancashire players and supporters.
