Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) is delighted to welcome back South African Test batsman Ashwell Prince as the Club's interim overseas player for the start of the 2010 season.
32-year old Prince will join the club from the start of the season and will stay until the arrival of Sri Lankan Captain Kumar Sangakkara after he completes his commitments at the ICC T20 World Cup and the proposed Asia Cup.
This will be Ashwell’s second stint with the Red Rose County after he covered VVS Laxman’s unavailability at the start of the 2009 season. During his 7-week stay, Ashwell played six first-class matches (5 County Championship and 1 x UCCE) at an average of 52.60 batting at number 3.
On announcing the signing, LCCC Cricket Director Mike Watkinson said; “We are fortunate that a world-class batsman like Ashwell is available for the start of the season. During his short stay with us last year, he delivered the goods with some outstanding performances and I know he is determined to pick-up where he left off. April and May is jam packed with Championship cricket and it is important we get off to the strongest start possible if we hope to achieve our goals.”
LCCC Head Coach Peter Moores said; "Ashwell played an important part in our early success last year with his quality as a player and his ability to perform under pressure. His approach to the game was extremely professional and his enthusiasm to play was a testament to how he conducted himself during his time with us. Ashwell's influence on everyone at the Club was a positive one and it is very exciting that he has agreed to come back and represent the Club again in 2010."
Speaking from Johannesburg ahead of South Africa’s fourth and final Test Match against England, Ashwell Prince said; “When Lancashire asked me if I would be interested in returning this season, I didn’t hesitate in saying yes. It’s a great club, with excellent facilities and I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the dressing room and the warm reception I received from the supporters.
“I was pleased with my performances for the County last season and will look to play my part in what we all hope will be a successful season for Lancashire.”
