Lancashire in Barbados

Lancashire in BarbadosHead Coach Peter Moores has revealed his aims for his squad's two-week tour of Barbados, where they will play a mixture of two-day, 40-over and Twenty20 cricket against Essex, Derbyshire and Yorkshire as well as two other local sides.

They open their account with a two-day match against Essex later today at the Kensington Oval.

Moores said: “We’ll go to win every game, but we want to get situations where we are under pressure to deliver our skills in different areas. Winning’s good because it accelerates the learning, but will winning be our number one goal? I don’t think so.

Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg practice at Windward Cricket Club, Barbados“It would be fantastic for the batters to face a firey opening spell off someone, and get through it.

It would be great in the one-day games to suddenly have the chance to chase down eight an over from the last ten, and get there.

“Or we could also have a goal through the middle of a 40-over game to get through scoring ten an over for five overs without losing a wicket.

“Those are the little bits that individual players will take heart from to say ‘I’ve done it once, I can do it again’.”

Lancashire have been training at their Windward CC base on the South East of the Island ahead of the first of eight days of match practice.

“The trip allows us to get outside and start to get into game plans that we are going to use in the season,” continued Moores, the ex-Sussex and England coach.

“We have a mixture of Twenty20, 40-over and two-day games, which is a chance to try and set it up and deliver the skills.

"When we come back home, hopefully we’ll then be ready to play some solid cricket.”
