2ndXI fall to DL defeat

Lancashire lost by 23 runs on DL in a rain-shortened game against Derbyshire at Glossop on Monday.

The game was a Quarter-Final tie in the ECB's new 2-innings 40-over one-day competition.

Lancashire had posted 91 for 4 in their first batch of 20 overs, with Paul Horton making 43 and Gareth Cross 25. Derbyshire were going well at 72 for 2 when rain ended proceedings after 12 overs, and the teams never got back out on the pitch.

Lancashire 91-4 (20 overs) Paul Horton 43, Gareth Cross 25
Derbyshire 72-2 (12 overs) Wes Durston 32*
Derbyshire won by 23 runs (D/L)

Team: Paul Horton, Karl Brown, Luke Procter, Gareth Cross, Adrian Shankar, Kyle Hogg, Luis Bentley, Stephen Parry, Daren Powell, Steven Cheetham, Simon Kerrigan.

Lancashire v Durham at Neston (2nd round)
Lancashire's 2ndXI clinched a last ball win using the new pink ball in the ECB's new 2-innings 40-over one-day competition.

Played at Neston CC, and in front of a large Bank Holiday crowd, the game rested on the last ball with Durham's Gidman requiring six to bring the scores level, but win the tie by virtue of having lost fewer wickets.

He was well caught by Jordan Clarke attempting a maximum and Lancashire are now through to the Quarter-Finals where they will meet Derbyshire next Monday at Glossop CC (11.30am start).

Durham reached the 20-over interval slightly ahead, having scored 92-1 in reply to Lanashire's 90-4. A half century from Gareth Cross and some late hiiting by Daren Powell helped Lancashire finish on 214 all out one ball short of their 40 overs.

Some tight bowling from Steven Cheetham (1-25) from his 8 overs, and Powell 3 -47 including 2 wickets in a crucial 37th over, left Durham needing 17 to win from the last over. With 10 runs from the first 5 deliveries, Durham need a 6 to tie the game and win having lost fewer wickets, with captain Gidman (46no) on strike. Gary Montgomery bowled the last ball which Gidman struck towards the long off boundary where Jordan Clark took the catch to leave Lancashire winners
by 6 runs.

Scores: Lancashire 90-4 (20 overs) & 214 all out (39.5 overs) Gareth Cross 56, Daren Powell 29, Karl Brown 26
Durham 92-1 (20 overs) & 208-7 (40 overs) Ben Harmison 54, Gidman 46, Daren Powell 3-47
Lancashire won by 6 runs

Team: Luke Procter, Karl Brown, Adrian Shankar, Gareth Cross, Luis Bentley, Chris Tipper, Stephen Parry, Jordan Clark, Gary Montgomery, Steven Cheetham, Daren Powell.

Throughout June, this new format of 2-innings 40-overs per side matches are being trialled in Second Xl cricket. This competition is being played on a knockout basis by the 18 First-Class Counties, with matches following Clydesdale Bank 40 playing conditions with the following variations:

• Each innings of 40 overs will be split into two phases of 20 overs
• Each team has 10 wickets at its disposal for its entire innings.
• A team’s second phase will continue from the point at which the first phase ended
• 20 overs of powerplays starting with the first 10 overs, with the other 10 split into two blocks of 5, one taken at the fielding team’s discretion, the other at the batting team’s discretion.
• Pink cricket balls and white clothing will be used. This is in order to understand more about the performance of pink balls in local conditions, along with how they combine with white clothing.
