Record Breakers

Record Breakers

LANCASHIRE COUNTY CRICKET CLUB and Trafford Council have officially been named Guinness World Record holders after organising the largest cereal breakfast ever held, on the day that the London 2012 Olympic Games Torch Relay passed through the borough.

An impressive 986 people were recruited to take part in the record-breaking meal at the cricket club on the morning of 24 June 2012. It followed the exciting spectacle of the Torch Relay, which saw Torchbearers including Sir Bobby Charlton carrying the Flame in Trafford on the run up to the Games.

Visitors were invited to celebrate the historic event by joining a morning of sporting fun at LCCC which included a race between some of Greater Manchester's favourite mascots and the 'breakfast munching' world record attempt.

Partner organisations in the area fully supported the event, with Kellogg's providing the breakfast and Tesco part-funding the event, whilst The LCCC Foundation organised and ran the events on site, with Trafford Leisure Trust, Salford City Reds Foundation, Lancashire Cricket Board and The Manchester United Foundation organising sports activities and Greater Manchester Police providing an independent adjudicator for the record-breaking munch.

There was also face painting, music and dance and a chance to meet some of the Torchbearers from that morning and to hold the Olympic Torch! CBeebies presenter Alex Winters compered the morning with Sir Bobby also making a special appearance.

The record usurps the previous record of 648 participants eating breakfast at an event in New Zealand last year.

Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Matt Colledge, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and it is great to at last be able to shout about this success. I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the breakfast event and also all those who came along in the early hours of the morning to take part - we couldn't have done it without you!"

LCCC Foundation Director, Michelle Carney, added: "We were delighted to host this World Record Breaking event in The Point, here at Emirates Old Trafford. Despite a very early start and a very wet day, the community turned out in their droves to support the Torch Relay, enjoyed the family fun day at LCCC and enjoyed breakfast, whilst becoming world record breakers!

"The Mascots were also out in force, competing in the Mascot Race, but Lanky put in a disappointing performance after slipping on the grass!  There’s always next year! We hope to have many more community events here at Emirates Old Trafford in the future, as part of our commitment to inspire communities through cricket."

Mascots Lanky Giraffe and Leo the Lion (from Trafford Council) join Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Matt Colledge, and James Sheridan, Chairman of the LCCC Foundation, to celebrate the world record announcement.
