Moore: We Can Bounce Back

Stephen Moore is confident Lancashire can come through their tough Yorkshire Bank 40 group despite an opening day loss to Durham.

Lancashire Lightning Squad: Glen Chapple (Captain), Karl Brown, Jordan Clark, Steven Croft, Gareth Cross (Wicketkeeper), Kyle Hogg, Simon Katich, Arron Lilley, Stephen Moore, Oliver Newby, Stephen Parry, Luke Procter, Ashwell Prince, Wayne White

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Derbyshire Falcons at the County Ground, opening batsman Moore has accepted that the Lightning were off colour in last week’s match against the Dynamos at Emirates Old Trafford.

But that has not dented his belief that the Red Rose can still better last season’s semi-final finish.

Lancashire have an impressive record in 40-over cricket since the start of 2011, winning 15 of their 26 matches, with two others being No Results.

They have last season’s winners Hampshire, Surrey, Durham, Essex, Derbyshire and Scotland in their seven-team group, which they have to finish top of to secure an automatic passage through to the semi-final.

And Moore said: "I think everyone who has looked at our group probably realises we have the strongest group of the three. That has its pros and cons. The positive side is that if you come through it, you're going to be well placed to go on and win the competition.

“The negative side is that every game is like a final. You've got some really talented one-day sides out there, and if you do the maths you realise that you don't have many chances.

“On the other side, if you are going to slip up, do it on the first game. You don't want to be slipping up when it's all to play for. If you can get on a roll, it's a great momentum builder. Although points are tight in the competition, you want to be peaking towards the end of the competition.

“This competition is one game in. We know we can only slip up a handful of times, but we are a good one-day unit. We've proved it over the last few years.”

Moore top-scored with 46 against Durham, and was part of a racing start as the hosts reached 73-1 inside eleven overs.

But they could not build on it, resulting in a total of 216-9, which Durham chased down comfortably with 31 balls to spare.

"It was a poor day all round for us really. We got off to a good start. The first eight overs of powerplay went to play, but from then on we lost our way with bat and then following up with the ball,” added Moore.

"By our standards we don't hide from the fact that we didn't put in the performance we expect from ourselves. Across the board, we're all pretty disappointed with ourselves.

"In this format, you've only got 40 overs. The top four or five batsmen are vital for you. You want one of your top five there at the end if you are setting a target. There were a few guys who got set and didn't go on, myself included.”

The clash will be Derbyshire’s first of this season’s competition. Captained by batsman Wayne Madsen, their overseas player is West Indian and ex-Lancashire batsman Shiv Chanderpaul.
