Lancs squad for Saltires game

Lancashire Lightning have named a 14-man squad for the visit of Scottish Saltires to Emirates Old Trafford on Tuesday (3.40pm start).

Lancashire Lightning squad: Glen Chapple (capt), Karl Brown, Jordan Clark, Steven Croft, Gareth Cross (wkt), Kabir Ali, Simon Katich, Simon Kerrigan, Stephen Moore, Stephen Parry, Ashwell Prince, Luke Procter, Tom Smith, Wayne White.

Scottish Saltires squad: Preston Mommsen (captain), Richie Berrington, Calvin Burnett, Neil Carter, Freddie Coleman, Matthew Cross, Gordon Goudie, Majid Haq, Moneeb Iqbal, Tom Latham, Michael Leask, Calum Macleod, Ruaidhri Smith.

It has been some week for Lancashire. A resounding LV= County Championship win over Essex at Chelmsford sandwiched in between two crucial Yorkshire Bank 40 wins over the same opponents on Sunday and Surrey at Guildford a week earlier.

It means the Red Rose county head into Tuesday's crucial YB40 fixture against Scottish Saltires at Emirates Old Trafford in buoyant mood as they look to put themselves in a healthy state in Group B before the break for Twenty20.

The Lightning have now won three from seven matches and would go top of the group with a win if Derbyshire Falcons beat Hampshire Royals in Southampton tomorrow.

Whatever the result on the South Coast, coach Peter Moores is just delighted to see his side stringing wins together in all forms as the season approaches its halfway point.

“To string wins together in all competitions is what we've been looking for to really play well as a staff,” said Moores. “We're trying to get momentum so that we hit the second half of the season in a very strong position.”

Scottish Saltires sit bottom of the the group with six defeats from six, but they will head to Emirates Old Trafford knowing that they won the last one-day clash between the two sides, a 50-over Friends Provident Trophy tie by two runs here in 2008.

All-rounder Tom Smith said on Sunday that Lancashire have five cup finals remaining in the group stages of the YB40, and that they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas in pursuit of top spot and a second semi-final in two years.

Smith returned to first-team action after injury with seven runs, two wickets and a catch at Chelmsford.

And after speaking about the week that has just gone, he went on to insist that the Lightning will certainly not be taking tomorrow’s fixture lightly.

“It's shaped our season in some ways (the last week). We're still in this competition, we're going strong,” he said. “In the Championship (we are) as well, which is great.

“It's a massive game. If we were unbeaten to this point, maybe we might just have taken it a little bit differently, I don't know. Now definitely not because every game is a cup final now. No matter what the opposition is, we have to win. If we play like we did against Essex, we'll win a lot of games.”

The Saltires were bowled out for 91 against Durham Dynamos on Sunday, with the hosts knocking off the runs for the loss of three wickets inside 13 overs.
