Report: In overcast and blustery conditions Leyland CC won the toss, & elected to bat on a firm wicket offering a little in it for both batsmen and the bowlers from the off.
Henry Thompson and Luis Reece set about building a firm base for Leyland with an opening stand of 52. The Colts soon grabbed the first wicket when Thompson fell for 20 (caught at first slip by Logan Weston) off the bowling of Richard Dempster.
This soon lead to a small cluster of Leyland wickets falling with Nathan McDonnell and Chris Parkinson falling in succession for 6 & 0 respectively (both caught behind by James McDonough) to gift Luke Williams and Ben Roberts their first Lancs wickets in the game and take Leyland CC to 69/3 at this point.
Luis Reece and Daniel Lamb set about rebuilding the momentum for the innings with a 4th wicket stand of 33 (Reece passing 50 along the way.) A shuffle in the bowling line up by Lancs captain Gary Knight then saw Mike Finan return for a second spell in the game. This resulted in the key wicket of Luis Reece falling for 60 off 82 balls (caught at long on by Matt Critchley.) His innings included 6x4s, 1x6s.
Leyland CC eventually reached 164/9 off their allocation of 50 overs, with Dannyl Lamb also making 37 with the bat off 84 balls (4x4s). For Lancs Colts, Matt Critchley returned 4-32 from 11 overs (4 maidens) and the remaining six wickets were shared at 1 apiece for the remaing bowlers.
In response, Lancs needed 165 runs from 50 overs from the off and this saw the early departure of Tom Steele for 0 (caught behind by Tom Murray) off the bowling of Andrew Makinson with the score at 16/1 at this point for Lancs. Haseeb Hammed and Gary Knight then set about rebuilding the innnings with a 2nd wicket stand of 49 at a steady pace in testing conditions. Leyland struck back with the wicket of Knight for 27 (caught by Dale Jones in the inner fielding circle) off the bowling of the ever experienced David Makinson to leave Lancs at 75/2.
Logan Weston (batting at 4) entered the game (on Colts debut) and with Haseeb Hammed took Lancs home to a comfortable 8 wicket victory at the Stanning Memorial Ground. Hammed finished on 62 off 143 balls (8x4s, 1x6s) and Weston 48 off 61 balls (9x4s) for Lancs.
Our next game will be on Sunday, 21st July 2013 when we play Leyland CC again in the Readers Cup Second Round.
