George Meets LCCC Heroes

George Meets LCCC Heroes

A little boy, who has raised more than £3000 for Macmillan Cancer Support after losing his mum to cancer, was presented with the prestigious Macmillan Young Cancer Champion Award on Tuesday (27th August)

Cricket fanatic George Devlin, 11, from Stalybridge accepted the award from his sporting heroes – players at Lancashire County Cricket Club - who hosted the special event in his honour at Emirates Old Trafford.

George started fundraising for Macmillan as a way of saying thank you to the nurses who cared for his mum Donna who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2011. Donna received support from Macmillan throughout her illness at The Christie Hospital in Manchester.

George’s dad, Stephen Devlin, said: “Macmillan were just fantastic, all the way through Donna’s illness. We had financial support and benefits advice from them, as well as a Macmillan nurse, Pauline, who visited us regularly and took the time to sit down with us and talk us through the facts in plain terms. Donna became such good friends with Pauline and looked forward to seeing her, so it’s really nice that George has been given this award.

LCCC Head Coach Peter Moores and players Paul Horton, Ashwell Prince, Tom Smith and Gareth Cross were on hand to present George with his award and also a LCCC goodie bag.

The annual award is presented to a young person under the age of 25 who has made an outstanding contribution to Macmillan. George’s inspirational baking endeavours have captured the hearts of people in his community who knew Donna and her family.

As well as hosting a hugely successful World’s Biggest Coffee Morning at Micklehurst Cricket Club, George organised a cake sale during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and frequently bakes cakes to sell during show intervals for his local drama group.

Amy Lewis, Fundraising Manager for Great Manchester said: “George is truly an inspiration and I couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient of the Macmillan Young Cancer Champion of the Year Award. It’s thanks to people like George that Macmillan can continue to fund nurses, benefits advisors and a wide range of other health professionals working across Manchester to ensure that no one in Manchester has to face cancer alone.”

The money George has raised will also support plans to develop Macmillan services in the community including a Health and Wellbeing Project in Trafford to support cancer survivors.
