Lancs Looking For Right Recruit

Lancs Looking For Right Recruit

LANCASHIRE'S HIERARCHY is still searching for Mr Right with regards to a new overseas player ahead of the 2014 summer.

Retiring Australian batsman Simon Katich was an instant hit at Emirates Old Trafford last term, impressing both on the field with his runs in all formats and off it by passing on his vast knowledge of the game to his Red Rose team-mates.

Since leaving the North West in mid-September, the former Test left-hander has decided to hang up his boots after the forthcoming Big Bash Twenty20 campaign with Perth Scorchers to take on a role in player development in Australian Rules football with Greater Western Sydney Giants.

With the recruitment of Kyle Jarvis during the latter stages of last summer on a three-year deal to bolster the bowling stocks, Moores has already admitted that a top order batsman is their preference for the overseas spot.

When the players returned to pre-season training last month, the Championship-winning coach said: “The way our side’s lined up, our preference would be an overseas batter if the right person’s around. Ideally he’d be a like for like replacement.

In all forms of the game, 38-year-old Katich scored 1,536 runs from 31 matches at an average of 54.85, with 1,097 of those coming in the LV= County Championship. His best score was 200 against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road in July.

And speaking only a few days ago, Moores admitted: “There’s no update yet, but that doesn’t mean we’re not in the market for one. Having said that, we’ll only get one if it’s the right person.

“You saw last year that Simon was exceptional for us. He was a great fit and someone who helped us develop our own players as well. If the right person is out there, we would be very interested, of course.

“But if they’re not, then quite rightly we’d say ‘we’ll hold that thought and see where we get to’.”
