Duo Called Up By England

Duo Called Up By England

STEPHEN PARRY and Jos Buttler have both been named in the squads for England's forthcoming tour to the West Indies and the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

Buttler, who signed for Lancashire from Somerset last year, is a regular in the England ODI set-up and recently featured in the one day series against Australia.

However, this will be Parry's first involvement in the senior set-up and is a reward for the outstanding form he has shown for the county over recent seasons.

The Audenshaw-born left arm spinner joined Lancashire's Academy in 2004 and was offered a Scholarship contract in 2007. He turned professional 12 months later and has since made over 50 appearances in both the domestic One Day and T20 competions for the Red Rose.  He also represented the England Lions in 2010.

National Selector James Whitaker said: "We would like to congratulate Moeen Ali and Stephen Parry on their selection for the tour to the Caribbean and then to represent England in the ICC World Twenty20. It is an exciting opportunity for Moeen and Stephen and all the England players.

“Both Moeen and Stephen have been very consistent performers for Worcestershire and Lancashire and both counties and their coaching staffs, must  take credit for their continued progress.

“Harry Gurney, under the guidance of the excellent coaches at Trent Bridge, has performed well for Nottinghamshire in limited overs cricket - showing good control with the white ball and, as a left arm quick, brings some variety to the tour party.

“England have won the ICC World Twenty20 before - in 2010 in the Caribbean - and this group has an exciting mix of youth and Twenty20 experience and I am sure with good preparation, desire and determination they will be able to produce an exciting brand of cricket.”

Lancashire Cricket director Mike Watkinson said: “It’s always a great story when a home grown player comes through the system and progresses to play for the first team and then for England. This fits in with our core aims and objectives.

“Stephen has worked very hard to get where he is and has had plenty of competition in his way with Gary Keedy and Simon Kerrigan.

“He has been extremely effective over a number of years in one-day cricket and fully deserves his selection in to the World Cup squad.

“His ambition will be to not only cement his international place but to also play more regularly in the longer form of the game.”

Peter Moores said: “"Stephen's call up is great news and a reward for all his hard work and consistent performances at County level.

“It is always special when a local player who has worked his way through the system is recognised Internationally and I'm sure there are many proud people in Lancashire today who have helped him on his journey, most notably his parents.

“It is also a great example that opportunity can come at anytime in sport and this one comes at a great time with England looking to build for the future.

“Personally I think he's ready to take it and we all wish him well in the coming months."

Stephen Parry said: “It goes without saying that I was absolutely delighted to have received the call from James Whitaker (selector). I am still in a bit of shock!

“It’s always an ambition to play for your country and being in the squad brings that dream a step closer to reality.

“I’ve worked hard on my cricket over the years and I must thank Lancashire for all the time and effort they have spent in developing me as a player.

“I am looking forward to linking up with the squad and cannot wait to get involved.”
