Profile

Karl Brown was awarded his first professional contract in 2006, his first team debut in a Friends Provident Trophy game against Worcestershire in 2007 and his County Championship debut in 2008.

Unfortunately, despite seeming set for more first team cricket in 2009, things didn’t quite work out for the Bolton-born batsman.

Brown, who played his early club cricket for Atherton in the Bolton Association, impressed immensely on Lancashire’s youth Scholarship and Academy programmes.

His first team chance came on the back of bucket loads of runs for the second team, and a couple of impressive showings in University friendly matches against the likes of Durham UCCE.

An opening batsman by trade, which was his role in the Pro40 League towards the end of the 2008 season, Brown has recently played club cricket at Northern in the Liverpool competition and at Milnrow in the Central Lancashire League. He moved back to the Liverpool Competition with Leigh for the 2009 season.

Not only has he featured for England under 19’s, on their tour of Malaysia in the winter of 2006, but he has also captained Lancashire’s second team on a number of occasions.

The likes of Lancashire cricket director Mike Watkinson and former captain Stuart Law, a world renowned batsman himself, were both greatly impressed with Karl’s displays in the first team in 2008. Although he missed out on gaining his maiden half-century, he recorded scores in the 40s in both one-day and four-day cricket.

Big things are expected from this youngster, who was awarded a place at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide for two months in the early part of 2009.

But the now 21 year-old was forced to bide his time in the most recent summer, despite another solid season in the second team, helping the side to both Championship and one-day finals.

He played just one first team match all season, a County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge when he had more success with his medium paced bowling rather than his batting, claiming the prized wickets of Alistair Brown and David Hussey within the space of three overs.

Hopefully, 2010 will be a different story.
