Profile
Adrian Shankar signed for Lancashire on a two-year deal at the start of 2009.
The 24-year-old Ascot-born Shankar has an impressive University and club cricket resume, but due to completing his Law Degree at Cambridge University (Queen’s College), Adrian’s cricketing ambitions were put on hold until 2006.
After finishing his degree, 2007 saw this former Middlesex Academy Member and Under19’s Captain represent the MCC in higher level games against the UCCEs and the MCC Young Cricketers.
Adrian spent some time with Lancashire during the 2008 pre-season period. He then spent the first half of the season playing for Kent’s Second XI, where he impressed with the bat, before returning to Lancashire in August to play in the county’s Second XI team.
On signing Shankar, cricket director Mike Watkinson said: “At Lancashire, we have a very successful Academy Programme which has so far produced nine players who have gone on to sign professional contracts.
“Adrian is a quality young batsman who fills a gap in our player development programme. He has attracted interest from a number of other counties which confirms his potential.”
Shankar has family ties to the North West, with his father hailing from Liverpool.
After a year at the club on a full-time basis, the right-hander has still to make his first team debut. He did, however, co-captain the Seconds to both the Championship and Trophy finals, scoring 378 runs from nine three-day matches in 2009.
He will spend the first part of the 2009/10 winter studying in the second and final year of his Cambridge University Masters degree in International Relations, which he is due to complete in the summer of 2010.
He is hoping to go to South Africa to play some club cricket in January.
