Kyle Hogg was the star of another impressive day for Lancashire in their three-day first-class friendly against the students of Durham University today.

The 25 year-old all-rounder claimed 4-22 from eleven overs to help bowl out the hosts for just 118 after the Red Rose had earlier declared their first innings on 404-6. Tom Smith had grabbed his maiden first-class half century this morning.

Stand-in captain Luke Sutton’s men will go for the win during tomorrow’s final day after Smith’s unbeaten 32 later helped his side to a second innings 69-1 at close.  [Scorecard]

Lancashire lead by 355 runs and will continue to bat on tomorrow to give the likes of Steven Croft (19 not out) and Karl Brown, amongst others, some more valuable time at the crease. Smith was not the only Lancashire batsman to confirm a 50 this morning, with wicketkeeper Sutton doing the same before he called time on their first innings batting effort.

Hogg took two wickets in the first three balls of the Durham innings, before coming back in his second spell to grab a couple more. Smith claimed 2-20 from 8.4 overs, while Oliver Newby also steamed in and pinched 2-28 from 12 overs. Left-arm spinner Gary Keedy was in no mood to give away runs, sending down an impressive spell of 26-14-23-1.

Hogg only played one County Championship match last season, but he has already impressed Moores enough to be given an important role opening the batting and bowling in one-day cricket. On Friday night it even looked like he might not play against the students at the Racecourse after bruising his right forearm against Derbyshire at Old Trafford earlier that day.

New overseas signing Ashwell Prince later recorded 18 in the second innings effort of 69-1 tonight, but was trapped lbw playing back to seamer Joe Buttleman.
