Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) recently confirmed that for the 2010 cricket season a Lancashire Colts side will play in the Northern League.

This Colts team will give emerging players in and around the Lancashire system the opportunity to play match cricket in the strong Northern League, whilst enabling LCCC to develop this talent pool.  Ideally a young player will play for the Colts side when his own club does not have a game and fixtures have been arranged to help this.  Where clashes may occur, playing for their own club will take priority unless permission is granted to LCCC by the club in question.

Over the past week, the finer details about the Colts participation in next year’s competition have been finalised. They are as follows;

  • 13 matches will be played by the Lancashire Colts side – all away.
  • Normal points system will apply for each match.
  • It is Lancashire’s intention to use emerging players in this Colts side.  This will include Academy/Scholarship players, players from the existing emerging players programme and trialists. The view of LCCC is to keep the side consistent in playing strength, whilst providing an opportunity for those in the system to further develop their game.
  • Due to the demands on younger players, it’s not anticipated that someone will be asked to play all games.
  • There is no intention to play any current LCCC Professional squad members, however an experienced cricketer or ex professional will play in each game to captain the side and provide mentoring influence.  This person would not play a front line role in the side i.e. bat down the order and bowl very occasionally.

LCCC Cricket Director Mike Watkinson; “From the outset, the Northern League have been totally supportive of what Lancashire is looking to achieve from this Colts side. The agreed framework will not only enable us to reach our objectives but also provide a great opportunity for young players of the Northern League clubs to show their talents.

“This is a very exciting initiative for cricket in Lancashire.  As a club we pride ourselves on identifying and developing homegrown talent who go on to represent the county, and this Colts side will only enhance this process.”
