After working hard in the field in Taunton and helping Lancashire secure their first County Championship in 77 years, spinner Simon Kerrigan was mopping up further honours with Club side Ormskirk just two days later.

Lancashire were lucky with rain rarely affecting play during the 2011 campaign, but Kerrigan’s Club had no such luck last Saturday, with the Preston born youngster turning groundsman for the morning along with 50 other volunteers, consisting of players and Members at Ormskirk.

The efforts were not in vein as Ormskirk managed to secure a nine wicket victory over Rainford to be crowned the Liverpool & District Division One champions.

Kerrigan took three wickets but all of the plaudits went to Lancashire’s Gavin Griffiths who recorded impressive figures of 5-20 from 7 overs.

This performance capped a fine year for Lancashire’s bowlers and Academy Director John Stanworth has paid tribute to both players.

“The picture just sums up Simon Kerrigan,” said Stanworth.

“He has always been a down to earth lad and these pictures show that. He loves to bowl, loves to bat and the picture epitomises everything about him.

“Just a week after getting nine wickets and days after winning the Championship with Lancashire, Simon is in his Ormskirk top, wearing flip flops using a leaf blower to get the pitch ready. It is a great picture and says it all about Simon Kerrigan.”

In regards to Griffiths, Stanworth continued by saying: “Gavin’s progress has been very sharp after coming from the Emerging Player Programme. In his first year playing at U17 level, Gavin was recognised as the Young Player of the Year.

“After being offered an academy place on the back of the potential shown, within 12 months he had made his England U19s debut against South Africa, as well as taking a five wicket haul in the second team.

“Like Simon, I am really encouraged by the progress shown by Gavin this season.”
