Head Coach Peter Moores was still optimistic about producing a result after the first day of Lancashire's vital LV= County Championship match against Worcestershire was rained off at New Road today

Play was abandoned at 2.20pm and the teams will have to hope for better conditions tomorrow.

Moores said: "I come from an era where you played three-day cricket all the time. Sometimes you had to manufacture a result, but sometimes you still got a genuine result because a side bowled well and the wicket did a bit.

"I think both sides will see it the same. The game has to be set up in the first two days, that's set up firstly because one side dominates the other and forces a result through normal means. If both sides are playing well and the wicket's flat, then you might look to see if there's another way of setting up a result.

"There's been a lot of rain today, so there's got to be moisture underneath. You'd expect the ball to do a bit. I think three days might still be enough to get a normal result. It's a real shame that we've lost today because both sides want to show what they've got."
