Six wickets by Adnan Ghaus just failed to take Lancashire to victory in an exciting top of the table 2ndXI Trophy match against Notts at Crosby. Early wickets put Lancs on the back foot, 38 for 2 after the power play. The mainstay of the innings was a partnership of 50 between Livingstone and White for the 4th wicket. Livingstone finished on 44 before being caught at mid-wicket. Lancashire were finally all out short of the 40 overs for 152.
Notts started well and looked to be cruising to an easy win before the introduction of Ghaus, who finished with career-best figures of 6 for 33. Andrea Agathangelou made a significant contribution with a fine display in the field taking five catches. Notts collaped from 60-0 to be 114-8 at the end of Ghaus' outstanding spell.
A fightback by Ball (27) and Hutton (13*) added 35 in 6 overs before Reece struck in the 38th over with the visitors four runs from victory. Two balls later it was all over, not because the batsman had struck the winning runs but because a 6-run penalty was imposed before the first delivery of the 39th over as Lancashire had fallen foul of a slow over-rate. It was a disappointing way for such an exciting game to finish, although on field warnings had been issued by the umpires about the danger of running out of the alloted time.
