New Ball Game For Kat

FORMER LANCASHIRE overseas batsman Simon Katich is set to call time on his glittering cricket career to take up a position with Australian Football League side Greater Western Sydney.

The 38-year-old, who played 56 Test matches for Australia between 2001 and 2010, will become the outfit's Player Development Co-ordinator on a full-time basis when he completes his Big Bash commitments with the Perth Scorchers in February.

Katich, who played county cricket for Derbyshire, Durham, Hampshire and Yorkshire, enjoyed two spells at Emirates Old Trafford as the Club's overseas player in 2010 and 2013.

Last season he played a key role for the Red Rose, hitting over 1,000 runs – which included a double century against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road - to help the Club win the Second Division of the LV= County Championship.

Head Coach Peter Moores added: "I'm sure I speak on behalf of all the players and coaching staff in saying thank you to Simon and to wish him and his family well for the future.

"His impact on everyone will be felt for many seasons to come both by the way he conducted himself on and off the field. His willingness to share his knowledge and experience with others was evident from the start and his work rate was an example to everyone.

"Our younger players could not have had a better role model and I hope that they will embrace some of his habits of focussed practise and his consistency of approaching every game as if it really mattered."
