Thunder head to Mumbai for winter training camp
Thunder Cricket are set to travel to India on Sunday 14 January for a 10-day warm-weather training camp as they step up preparations for the 2024 season – presented by Sportsbreaks.com and inspiresport.
10 players will travel to Mumbai alongside four members of coaching staff – including newly appointed Head Coach Chris Read – to take part in a spin camp designed to enhance their skills as bowlers and also for batters facing spin bowling in overseas conditions.
The travelling squad members will take part in a specialised programme which includes several training days and match practice against local opposition across a number of different venues in Mumbai.
The training camp will become an annual trip for Thunder and is being funded by Sportsbreaks.com and inspiresport as part of a new investment that will see the long-term commercial partners of Lancashire Cricket provide additional funding to support women’s cricket in the North West.
Speaking ahead of the trip, Thunder Head Coach Chris Read said: “I am really looking forward to getting out to India. It's a great opportunity for me to get to know players a lot better - during a ten-day trip where we'll be working very closely together so early into my new role.
“It's a great opportunity from a cricketing standpoint as there's so many opportunities to learn and develop your game in the subcontinent. This year, we are focusing on playing spin. We know how big of a part spin plays in women's cricket and we want to be at the forefront of developing our batters to be equipped to cope with that and for our bowlers to be up there with the best in the country.
“We'll be lucky enough to tap into local resources. We will have bowlers and people on hand to help us with our training sessions and a real opportunity to learn some new skills, but to also get the volume of competing and bowling under their belts on grass in January. That is is something that not many sides in the women’s game get to do – followed by our pre-season trip alongside the men in March.
“We are hugely grateful for the phenomenal support that we receive - which allows a trip like this to be possible. I've been blown away with the support from our partners, and from Lancashire Cricket, that is going into the Thunder programme right now. The support for the Thunder programme is exceptional and unprecedented for women’s cricket in this country.”
