2ndXI win to reach final

2ndXI win to reach final

Lancashire have defeated Yorkshire by 10 wickets inside two days to clinch a place in the 2ndXI Championship Final, where they will likely meet Middlesex or Essex. The final is on 16-19 September and the venue will be decided once the other finalists are known.

Report: Day 1 - Griffiths struck in his first over, bowling Callis for 2, and then Bailey joined in with 2 wickets in his 3rd over to leave Yorkshire 13-3 after 5 overs, a great start for Lancs. Bailey added the wicket of Rhodes in his 6th over, to put the White Rose on 37-4. Yorks fought back adding 61 for the 5th wicket before Croft trapped Robinson in the last over before lunch ball to make it 98-5 at the interval.

Croft picked up his 2nd wicket in the 4th over after lunch, trapping Robinson lbw for 32. Clark claimed another lbw decision in the next over to dismiss Hodgson for 53, the first of his 4 wicket haul that helped wind up the Yorks innings for a lowly 152.

Lancashire made a good start with 52 for the first wicket (46 in boundaries) before Davies fell lbw to Robinson for 23. Brown continued to attack the bowling, reaching his half century from 41 balls, before he was trapped lbw for 57. Croft went for a duck, but Tuesday’s batting hero Livingstone was joined by young batsman Zelum and they took the score to 118-4 at tea.  The pair added 73, before Zelum departed for 23 followed quickly by Bailey, but debutant Tom Steele from Lancs Academy joined Livingstone and soon saw his partner reach his 50 from 77 balls.

Livingstone took the attack to Yorkshire and reached his 3rd century of the season against Yorkshire 33 balls later before being caught with a great one handed catch on the deep midwicket boundary by Coad for 101. The partnership added 86 for the 7th wicket. Steele and Griffiths saw Lancs to the close on 252-7 a lead of exactly 100.

Day 2 - Lancashire had an early setback when Steele went caught behind after adding 6 to his overnight score. Griffiths and Abid then added 21 for the 9th wicket, and Abid and Ghaus a further 48 for the last wicket, with Abid last man out for 44. Lancashire's total of 330 all out meant the Red Rose had established a significant advantage with a very useful lead of 178.

Bailey again provided an early breakthrough before lunch, having Tattersall caught behind for 1 in the 5th over. Bailey picked up his second wicket in the 9th over after lunch, removing Yorks danger man Hodgson, again caught behind. Ghaus entered the fray and destroyed the Yorkshire middle order with 3 wickets in 3 overs, a slip catch for Brown and two more victims for Davies. Bailey returned towards the end of the session to trap Wilson lbw after Yorks had added 52 for the 6th wicket.

Yorkshire, 171 for 6 at tea, were still 7 runs short of making Lancashire bat again and Bailey heaped futher problems on the home side with a wicket in the first over on the resumption of play, Fisher caught at mid-on by Clark. Callis was the mainstay of the Yorkshire innings, bringing up his maiden century with a boundary off Livingstone’s first ball, but was bowled by the second. Wardlaw became Livingstone’s second wicket, bowled for 30 and Griffiths finished the innings bowling Coad for 0, which left Lancashire requiring 48 to win.

Brown and Davies made short work of the target, taking 34 balls, and the 24 points won clinched top spot in the the Northern Division - and a place in the Championship Final - with a game to go.
