Chapple insists hard work ahead

Glen Chapple insists there is still plenty of hard work to do to secure Lancashire's return to the top tier of the LV= County Championship, despite holding a 39-point lead over third placed Worcestershire with seven games to go.

The Red Rose go in search of their fourth win on the spin against Glamorgan at Emirates Old Trafford, starting on Monday, having come off the back of an impressive win against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road last week.

Lancashire squad: Glen Chapple (capt), Andrea Agathangelou, Karl Brown, Steven Croft, Gareth Cross (wkt), Kyle Hogg, Simon Katich, Simon Kerrigan, Arron Lilley, Ashwell Prince, Luke Procter, Luis Reece, Tom Smith, Wayne White.

Chapple’s side are also one point clear at the top of the league with a game in hand on Northants, although winning the title would just be the icing on the cake. Finishing in the top two is the most important thing.

It was suggested to Chapple after the Northants’ win that his side already had one foot back in Division One given the size of their cushion over Worcestershire.

"It's too early for me,” said the captain. “We've got seven games left, and we've got to concentrate on the cricket we're playing. We're playing with confidence, and we want to keep that. Let's not get ahead of ourselves and maintain this form.

"It's obviously the club's goal to be in the first division. We're a big club, and we want to spend as little time as possible in the second division. It's inevitable that some big clubs will be in the second division from time to time given that two go down out of nine. But it's not a place you want to be for any period of time.

"We're in one of those patches where if you're in, you've just got to try and cling on to and look forward to the next game with the same mentality and application. We'll take it one game at a time. We're playing with confidence and quality at the moment. We'll be looking forward to the next game, definitely.”

Lancashire secured their first win of the season against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay by 14 runs in early May when, defending 154, they bowled the hosts out for 139 during the final two sessions. Chapple took four wickets and Simon Kerrigan five.

Glamorgan have only won one of their nine matches so far this season and sit second bottom of the table.
