Colts claim second win

Colts claim second win

Lancashire Colts registered their second win in consecutive days by comprehensively beating Northern League champions Leyland CC by 8 wickets

Leyland won the toss and decided to have the first use of the wicket, which looked good for batting with sunny overhead conditions.

However, a tight and economical opening spell of bowling from Dan Hawke and Captain Jack Dewhurst ensured the hosts were restricted to 41-1 inside 14 overs with Dewhurst accounting for the early departure of Chris Parkinson for 14 caught by Oliver Law at mid-wicket.

Oliver Jump and Levi Wolfenden brought further pressure and when Henry Thompson was bowled by Jump for 17 the hosts were soon up against it at 76-2 with 25 overs gone. The 3rd wicket partnership of 75 between Adam Coates and Leyland CC South African pro Bret Pelser set the Leyland innings back on course again.

But the introduction of the spinners Mattie McKiernan and Greg Butterworth, bowling in tandem, put the breaks on scoring. Both bowled impressively. Greg Butterworth tore through the Leyland batting order to claim a five wicket haul.

The left arm spinner took the key wicket of Bret Pelser lbw for 45 (off 60 balls, 6x4s, 1x6s), had James Rounding stumped by keeper Dan Pawson for 15, and bowled captain Dave Makinson for 2 to end with figures of 5-35 off 10.4 overs. This effort included great support by McKiernan from the other end who returned with 3-24 off 13 overs. Leyland were bowled out for 154 off 49.4 overs.

The Lancashire Colts innings got off to a slow start as opener Lewis Jackson was lbw off Bret Pelser for 3 and the ever experienced Dave Makinson accounting for his opposite number Jack Dewhurst lbw for 2 when he played across the line, to leave the visitors in trouble at 19-2 after 10 overs.

However, determined batting with quality stroke play from opener Ammer Mirza who hit 76 not out (15x4s) and Dan Pawson who struck 64 not out (10x4s, 1x6s), in an unbeaten 3rd wicket partnership of 136, guided Lancashire Colts to a comprehensive 8 wicket win.

Lancashire Colts will look for to push for three wins in three as they head up for their next game against Kendal CC.
