Colts enjoy cup win

The Lancashire Colts enjoyed a 72 run win in their Readers Cup tie with St. Annes CC

St Annes CC vs Lancashire Colts CB (Readers Cup), Sunday, 8th July 2012

Lancashire Colts 243-7 (40 overs)
St Annes 171 all out (35 overs)
Lancashire Colts won by 72 runs

In fine conditions at St Annes CC, Lancs won the toss and elected to bat on a good to firm wicket. The opening pair of Fayaz Ughradar and Louis Bentley accumulated very quickly from the off hitting a plethora of boundaries to all parts of the ground. The pair finally became unsettled with the introduction of Dinuka Hettiarachchi who removed Ughradar stumped for 36 off 26 balls (5x4s, 1x6s) with the score at 62-1 (7.4 overs).

Bentley continued in aggressive fashion and found a new partner in Scott Friend and the two added a second wicket stand of 56 in quick time before Friend fell again to Dinuka, bowled for 23 from 25 balls (3x4s, 1x6s) and the score at 118-2 (14 overs). This set the foil for what looked a very good score over 40 overs (i.e. a possible 300+).

However, seldom does one read into these things lightly and St Annes then took the key wicket of Bentley for 59 from 51 balls (6x4s, 2x6s) when he chipped back a caught and bowled chance to Matthew Taaffe with the score at 146-3 (20.2 overs in) and a possible fight back on the cards.

This set about a small middle order collapse as Lancs went from 146-3 to 196-7 in the space of 11.3 overs. St Annes captain Andy Kellett proving more than a master with his bowling changes in the process of this with the wickets of Dan Pawson for 30, Chris Long for 30, Adam Roylance for 0 & Ben Maddocks for 0 all accounted for by his changes in Matt Grindley and Peter Cummings.

Lancs eventually reached 243-7 off 40 overs thanks to an 8th wicket partnership of 47 (unbroken) by Dan Hawke and Dan Edwards. Edwards added a vital 30 off 29 balls (2x6s) with some big hitting at the death in this partnership. For St Annes CC the best of the bowling figures saw Matt Grindley return 2-24 from 8 overs (2 maidens) & Dinuka Hettiarachchi return 2-40 from 8 overs.

In response, St Annes CC began in brisk fashion with the power and muscle of Peter Cummings hitting some big boundaries alongside his opening partner Atiq Uz-Zaman. Cummings was the first to fall with the score at 46-1 (6.3 overs) when he was caught by Mark Hitchen off the bowling of Dan Hawke for a very well timed 36 off 28 balls (4x4s, 2x6s).

The rate and the pressure showed for St Annes but Atiq Uz-Zaman found able partners along the way in Nathan Bolus and Captain Andy Kellett to take the score past the 100 mark. However, Lancs took key wickets at regular intervals and when the top four including Atiq had gone they were at 114-4 off 21.1 overs.

This left a very heavy burden on the St Annes middle and lower order and Lancs used the spin twin partnership of Ben Maddocks and Dan Edwards to proven affect dismissing St Annes CC for 171 all out in 35 overs. Ben Maddocks taking 5-25 off 8 overs (1 maiden) and Dan Edwards 3-23 off 8 overs (1 maiden) for Lancs Colts. The other wickets also saw Dan Hawke take 1-25 from 5 overs ( 1 maiden) and Fayaz Ughradar 1-18 from 5 overs (1 maiden). This saw Lancs to a comfortable 72 run victory where we are likely to face a tie with Darwen CC away in the next round.

Our next game was due to be played against Chorley CC (Northern League Prem fixture) on Sunday, 15th July but it has been moved to a later date to be confirmed due to Chorley’s fine run in the Kingfisher National Knock-Out.
Scott Churchman, Lancashire Colts.
