Colts make winning start

Colts make winning start

Lancashire Colts got their 2011 campaign underway with a four-wicket victory against Fleetwood in their opening ECB Northern Premier League match.

Fleetwood won the toss and elected to bat in very windy conditions

Scott Kirwin and Dan Hawke struck early for Colts removing both openers to see the hosts at 24-2 inside 11 overs. A partnership of 78 by Adam Parker and Dean Bell steadied the home side to 93-2 after 25 overs.

Persistent bowling in windy conditions brought result when Adam Parker was caught behind off Liam Watkinson for 43 and Dean Bell was stumped for 43 off Tom Bailey. This left Fleetwood at 102-4 after 28 overs. A further wicket immediately followed with Mark Wilkinson bowled for 1 by Mattie McKiernan and the hosts were now struggling at 103-5 after 30 overs.

Fleetwood recovered with Mark Clinning’s 38 runs off 59 balls (4x4's) and some power hitting from Fleetwood CC pro Ryan Smith  with 41 off 62 balls (1x4's, 2x6's) in a 6th wicket stand of 78, which saw the home side reached 199-7 off 50 overs. All the Colts bowlers had a good first outing and wickets were shared, with Liam Watkinson returning 3-55 and the wicket keeper Alex Davies taking two catches and two stumpings.

In response, Lancashire Colts lost opener Callum Rowe early caught behind for 6 but Mark Walling and Alex Davies, combining caution with aggression, took Lancs to 86-2 off 25 overs when Mark Walling departed lbw.

This brought about a mini collapse as a further two quick wickets fell with Lee Dale, and Liam Watkinson out to reduce Lancashire Colts to 92-4 after 29 overs. Alex Davies though remained strong at the crease for 63 off 89 balls (10x4's) before falling to a good catch at point. Oliver Law fell shortly after caught and bowled to Ryan Smith and Lancashire Colts were now at a tight spot 137-6 off 39 overs.

The later part of the game provided an exciting finish with Scott Kirwin and Captain Jack Dewhurst in a 6th wicket stand of 63 to see Lancashire Colts home to a four wicket victory with 5 balls to spare. Scott Kirwin finished with 54 off 54 balls (6x4's, 1x6's) and Jack Dewhurst with 24 off 31 balls (2x4s).
