Colts suffer defeat at Morecambe

Colts suffer defeat at Morecambe

The Lancashire Colts slipped to a six wicket defeat in their most recent game in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier League

Morecambe CC vs Lancashire CB Colts, Sunday, 10th June 2012
Lancashire Colts 96 all out (41.3 overs)
Morecambe CC 98-4 (31 overs)
Morecambe won by 6 wickets

In sunny conditions at Morecambe CC on a firm wicket, Lancs won the toss and elected to bat. The opening partnership of Scott & Mark Friend found the going slow and steady as the Morecambe CC attack bowled a good line and length. Scott Friend fell for 4 to a superb one handed catch by Mark Woodhead at first slip off Pakistani star Umar Amin to leave the score at 7-1 inside 10 overs.

The Morecambe CC bowlers then seized their initiative with Umar Amin removing Adam Roylance lbw for 3, Robbie Jones for 5 (caught Ikram Ullah at second slip), Chris Long for 3 (bowled), and Ed Bullock for 0 (caught Clough at gully) to leave Lancs struggling at 37-5 after 25.4 overs with Amin claiming a five-wicket haul at this point.

Mark Friend showed determined resistance with a patient 41 off 115 balls (5x4s) although it proved not enough as Lancs were finally dismissed for 96 all out in 41.3 overs. Gaz Pedder took the final five wickets of the innings for Morcambe CC, returning figures of 5-22 off 10.3 overs. Umar Amin finished with 5-34 off 21 overs.

The Colts needed early wickets, and after the opening partnership of Ikram Ullah and Mark Woodhead had reached 20-0 off 4 overs, Danny Hawke struck when Ullah under edged to wicketkeeper Bullock for 18 to leave the score at 26/1 off 5 overs.

Pakistani professional Umar Amin and Woodhead found scoring difficult due to some disciplined bowling from the Lancs bowlers, and the Colts were further rewarded with a second wicket when Amin skied a dolly chance to Richard Dempster in the close fielding circle off Mark Hitchen to leave the score 40-2 off 12 overs.

Two further wickets followed including Woodhead, caught behind for 15 off Mark Hitchen, and Josh Dixon bowled by Luke Williams for 1 to leave Morecambe struggling at 53-4 from 18 overs.

Sadly for the Colts that was as good as it got, with Morecambe captain Lewis Edge and Ryan Pearson adding an unbroken 5th wicket partnership of 45 to win the game, the home side finishing on 98-4 off 31 overs.

Our next game will see us play at St Annes away in the Readers Cup on Sunday, 25th June 2012.
