Pupils Offered First Class Event

Pupils Offered First Class Event

YOUNG CRICKETERS with learning disabilities from the region will be taking part in a competition at Middleton Cricket Club this week with the participants being invited to watch first class cricket at the famous Emirates Old Trafford later in the month.

On Tuesday 11 June boys and girls from New Bridge School, Samuel Laycock, Melland High, Chatsworth, Firwood and Loretto College will compete in an exciting  ‘kwik cricket’ tournament to determine a winner of the Carol Roscoe Memorial trophy.

The following Thursday will see pupils from New Bridge, Samuel Laycock, Rumworth, Southern Cross, Burnage Media and Arts College and St John Vianney also take part in a similar competition.

All those who have been involved will then be invited to Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday 20 June when Lancashire host Northamptonshire in the LV= County Championship.

Bobby Denning, Assistant Director/Head of Development, Lancashire Cricket Board said: “Part of the Lancashire Cricket Board’s disability programme is to engage with specialist schools for pupils with disabilities, who wish to compete in local competitions. We are very proud of our two Greater Manchester disability schools competitions that run each year.

“The schools compete for the Carol Roscoe Memorial Trophy.  The competitions run out of one of our designated Disability Clubs, Middleton CC, and we encourage all participants to further their cricket opportunities by attending the Saturday morning disability coaching sessions, delivered by the Club.

“The Lancashire Way project has provided us with the opportunity to bring the participants along to Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday 20 June to further develop their cricket experience at a first class match.”

There will be a similar competition held on Merseyside at Alder CC on Thursday 20 June with participants being invited to Emirates Old Trafford for the second day of Lancashire's LV=County Championship match against Glamorgan.

Bobby Denning added: "We are very fortunate that one our key partners, Merseyside Sport, continue to run a successful disability schools competition each year. The competition runs out of one of our designated Disability Clubs Alder CC. The Lancashire Way project has provided us with another opportunity to bring the children along to Emirates Old Trafford."
