Cover is more of a roaming fielding position than most – running as it does between point and mid-off. It’s a busy position, with some of the best front and back foot shots coming through this region. The tasks of the cover fielder involve stopping runs and snaffling sharp catches.
Depending on the volume of the shots coming through, an ‘extra cover’ may be employed, a position which is further towards mid-off than the conventional cover position.
If this fielder were to be brought forward to a catching position, where you might find Kevin Pietersen fielding for England, this would be known as ‘short extra cover’. Conversely, moving the fielder back towards the boundary in a more defensive position, would mean he was now standing at ‘deep extra cover’.
