Hogg in line for one-day start

All-rounder Kyle Hogg is set to make his first appearance of the season on Sunday when Lancashire take on group leaders Somerset at Taunton in the Clydesdale Bank 40

Squad: Croft (capt), Anderson, Brown, Cheetham, Chilton, Cross, Hogg, Horton,  Kerrigan, Keedy, Moore, Procter, Parry

Hogg has been the victim two separate injuries, one to his thigh and the other to his ankle, which have forced him onto the sidelines since the start of last month.

He suffered a minor tear in his left thigh during the three-day friendly against Oxford University at the Parks before rolling his right ankle in training prior to last week’s LV= County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

“It’s my first game of the season, so I’m really looking forward to it,” said the 27 year-old.

“It’s been very frustrating, especially after waiting to play after such a long winter. It’s great to see us winning, but you still really want to be part of it. I’ve just got to come in now and take my chance.”

Somerset have won four out of four games in the CB40 this summer, and Lancashire have only won one out of three. It means the Lightning can ill-afford too many more slip ups in order to keep their semi-final qualification hopes alive.

“In the pre-season we looked at the Essex and Somerset games as cup finals because if you can beat those two teams, you can beat anyone in the competition,” Hogg continued. “We didn’t play that well at Essex, but Somerset is a good chance to get our one-day season on track.”

Following Sunday’s rain affected defeat against Glamorgan at Old Trafford, Steven Croft admitted that the Red Rose need to improve their 40-over form quick-sharp after struggling in recent seasons.

Hogg agrees. He said: “We tend to bat really well and not bowl well or do it the other way around. We’ve just not done them both well in the same game. We’ve done that so well in four-day cricket. We’ve got the runs and then the wickets, and we’ve been demolishing teams.

“It’s frustrating for us and people watching. When we play well, I don’t think there’s many, if any, who will beat us. It’s something we’re aware, and something we need to put right.”

But Hogg is still confident, saying: “We look at every game as one we should win, and Sunday’s no different. Once you get

Lancashire may have to win as many as eight matches out of their remaining nine to ensure qualification for the last four.

a run together and win a few games, it’s amazing how quickly your luck changes.”

If he plays, Hogg will have to combat a powerful Somerset batting line-up. England hopeful Craig Kieswetter may be injured, but there are plenty of other match-winners in the Cidermen’s line-up.

Hogg, however, is not fazed. In fact, on the back of six weeks out, he is relishing the prospect.

He added: “In the past I’ve maybe looked at bowling at Taunton to Trescothick and the like with a bit of apprehension, but it’s something you should look forward to. It’s a great opportunity for me and the lads.”
