Simon Kerrigan has been included in the 14-man England squad for 5th Investec Ashes Test
The squad for the final Investec Ashes Test of the series, commencing on Wednesday at the Kia Oval, also includes Warwickshire’s Chris Woakes who has 13 ODI and four T20 caps since making his international debut in 2011. Pace bowlers Tim Bresnan (stress fracture in lower back) and Graham Onions (broken finger, right hand) were both ruled out of the fifth Test through injury.
Reacting to the news, Lancashire's Cricket Director Mike Watkinson said: "It is a great reward for the progress Simon has made over the last few years with us.
"It is a great opportunity. Every time you take to the field with a county like us, you put yourself in the shop window. It's good that our players are being recognised in the way that they are.
"Simon's still improving. He's still young and working out the right way to bowl at various stages in the game, what tactical role he's got at a certain stage in the match. But he's getting people out, and good ones. That's very promising."
Simon Kerrigan told us: “ I found out yesterday when I got a call from Geoff Miller. I’m delighted to be selected, but it was a bit hard to take in when he rang. It all felt a bit surreal to be honest. Hopefully I can impress over the next couple of days and be ready if they choose two spinners (for the Test).
I’ve been inundated with messages of good luck and congratulations. My phone went into a bit of a meltdown this morning, and I’m grateful for all the messages and good wishes.”
England currently lead the five match Investec Ashes series 3-0 following a 14 run victory at Trent Bridge, a 347 run victory at Lord’s, a draw at Emirates Old Trafford and a 74 run victory at Emirates Durham ICG.
National selector, Geoff Miller, said: “The players have produced some good cricket in this Investec Ashes series so far and should be congratulated on their performances but I have no doubt that the squad will be determined to finish this series with another strong performance this week and will be working hard in the build up to Wednesday. The inclusion of five pace bowlers as well as an additional spinner in Simon Kerrigan who has impressed with Lancashire and England Lions in recent years gives Andy Flower and Alastair Cook plenty of options once they have assessed the conditions at the Kia Oval.
“Tim Bresnan has made valuable contributions with both bat and ball during the series and I would like to wish him all the very best in his recovery from his back injury. The focus for Bresnan now will be the tour of Australia later this year while this Test will provide an opportunity for another member of this squad to make equally vital contributions.”
