Kerrigan stil hopeful of result

Simon Kerrigan is still hopeful that Lancashire can force a result in their LV= County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton despite seeing the final two sessions of day two wiped out due to rain today.

The county's left-arm spinner, celebrating another England Lions call-up for next month's four-day clash with the West Indies at Northampton, was one of the not out batsmen when the rain arrived at 12.25pm with the Red Rose at 395-9 in their first innings.

The first job when play resumes tomorrow will be to clinch a fifth batting bonus point, which will be achieved if the visitors can post 400. Then it is all about trying to bowl Somerset out twice in two days.

"We didn't start today as well as we'd have liked to, and they bowled really well," said Kerrigan, who saw five wickets fall for 26 runs to take the score from 365-4 to 391-9.

"Obviously the rain's disrupted the game a bit, but we've got runs on the board. It's not like we're in this position with 200 on the board.

"There is still the possibility, even though there's rain around, that we can bowl well and hopefully bowl them out twice if it goes our way."

South Africa Test bowler Vernon Philander was the star in the 85 minutes of play possible with three wickets as Lancashire slipped from their overnight score of 363-4.

The Red Rose lost three wickets in 10 balls as Gareth Cross and Luke Procter were caught behind by Craig Kieswetter off the bowling of Philander and Peter Trego respectively. When Steven Croft fell for 113, also caught behind by Kieswetter off Philander, Lancashire were 365-7 in the 93rd over.

Croft, who could not add to his overnight score, faced 202 balls and hit eleven fours and two sixes.

Sajid Mahmood was next to go when his middle stump was rocked back by Philander for just three before Glen Chapple released some of the pressure with a valuable 20, including a crisp clip through mid-wicket and an eye-catching on-drive off Trego followed by a cover drive off Craig Meschede.

The visiting captain had helped to take his within nine runs of 400 when he edged Irish left-arm spinner George Dockrell to James Hildreth at slip to become the ninth wicket to fall. Kerrigan and Kyle Hogg will resume in the morning.

Kerrigan, meanwhile, is understandably relishing his first appearance in a four-day match for the Lions, who he has played for six times in one-day cricket against Sri Lanka A and Bangladesh A since last August.

The clash on May 10 is also the day of his 23rd birthday, but his selection in the 12-man party means he will miss Lancashire's Championship match against Sussex at Hove, which starts a day earlier.

"I found out on Thursday when Geoff Miller (England's national selector) gave me a call," he said. "He just said 'good luck and I look forward to catching up with you'.

"I had a couple of games during the winter in the one-day stuff for them as well as last summer, but this will be my first four-dayer. I enjoy bowling in four-day cricket, bowling longer spells and trying to work the batsmen out."
