Lancashire name Academy squad for 2009/2010

Lancashire County Cricket Club is pleased to announce the players who have been selected in the 2009/2010 Lancashire Academy.

Five of these ten cricketers are new to the Lancashire Academy and represent cricket clubs all over the North West – once again highlighting the depth in talent around the County.


The Lancashire Academy was first introduced in 2002 with the primary aim to produce world class cricketers through identifying, assessing and further developing the most talented players available to the Club.  To date, the Academy has seen twelve of its graduates sign professional cricket contracts. Of these, eight have played for Lancashire.

This year's programme began on 6th December and continues throughout the winter and into the cricket season next year, where many are hoped to play in 2nd XI and Colts matches for the County.

Yaqub Bhamji

DOB: 05/09/91

Right-arm fast


Yaqub is a right-arm quick from Darwen Cricket Club and in 2008 was a member of the Lancashire U17’s squad. Has developed late as a cricketer and is hungry to succeed.


Chris Connolly

DOB: 05/11/91

Right-arm fast

Chris has been member of the Lancashire Academy since 2007/08 and has impressed the County’s Coaching Staff with his genuine natural pace.

He plays for Chester Broughton Hall Cricket Club.

Liam Livingstone

DOB: 04/08/93

Right-arm wrist spin

Right-hand bat, top order

Liam first became a member of the Lancashire Academy last season. He is a genuine all-round cricketer known predominantly for his top order batting and is an emerging leg spinner. Named All Out Cricket’s Young Player of the Year for 2009.

Luke Perry

DOB:  10/12/90

Left-hand bat

Luke plays his club cricket for Farnworth Social Circle in the Bolton League and will be with us for a second year in Lancashire’s Academy.  He is a talented left-handed batsman who was recognised by England’s U18 Scholarship Programme last year.

Joe Davies

DOB:  05/09/92


Right-hand bat

This is Joe’s first year in the Lancashire Academy. A highly regarded wicket-keeper/ batter who plays for Leigh Cricket Club. A player regularly involved with national age group cricket.

Jack Dewhurst

DOB:  25/06/93

Right-arm fast-medium

Right-hand bat

This is Jack’s first year in the Lancashire Academy after being identified with strong performances at club level for Clitheroe and particularly Lancashire U17s

He was named the LCB’s Player of the Month for July following his performances for the county.

A genuine all rounder cricketer.  

Tom Foster

DOB:  04/10/92

Right-hand bat

Left-arm medium pace

Tall right handed bat and left arm seam bowler who competed well for Lancashire at U17 level last season. Determined and motivated to improve his game.

Henry Thompson

DOB:  01/12/92

Right-hand bat

Right-arm medium

Another new addition to the Lancashire Academy, Henry is a tall right-handed opening batsman who plays his club cricket for Leyland.

Muhammad Abid

DOB:  28/10/93

Right-arm leg spinner

Right-hand bat

A talented young leg spinner who has played above his age for the last two years. He is developing his cricket skills and fitness and will win games for the county in the future.

Will Chapples

DOB:  22/12/92

Right-hand bat

Right-arm swing bowler

Will is currently a student at Sedbergh School in Cumbria where he was first brought to our attention. Impressed on the England U18 Scholarship Programme in October. Powerful striker of a ball.


On making the announcement, Academy Director John Stanworth said; “We have very high expectations for our Academy Members, and this is why we have a very thorough and stringent selection process.  We are always looking to raise the bar and challenge those players in the programme.


“The players will train at Old Trafford as a squad and as individuals during the winter months.  At times they will practice along side members from the First-Team squad, providing further inspiration and insight during their development.


“2010 will see the introduction of a Lancashire Colts side in the Northern League where it’s hoped many of these cricketers will have the opportunity to play together on a regular basis and put what they have learnt into practice against strong opposition.”
