Lancs batting challenge

Lancs batting challenge

Lancashire will have to bat out the final day of their LV County Championship match with Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford if they are to secure a draw.

The visitors advanced to 367-9 in their first innings before rain halted play at lunch. They declared, anticipating a restart at 5.30pm after close to a four-hour delay. But Lancashire, faced with a first innings deficit of 178, were only required to see out one over of their second innings due to bad light. Paul Horton and Tom Smith reached 1-0. [Scorecard]

Chris Read and Paul Franks both recorded half-centuries, and Andre Adams hit a lusty 32-ball 33 for Notts. Read, Franks and Adams helped to take 104 runs from one ball less than 30 overs in today’s morning session before the rain came.

Nottinghamshire’s captain/wicketkeeper Read reached his fifty in the very first over of the day, off 90 balls with nine fours, but was run out by a sharp bit of fielding from Francois du Plessis ten overs later for 63.

The visitors were 304-7 in the 107th over of their innings, and had gained their third batting bonus point. Adams smashed left-arm spinner Gary Keedy for six twice in successive overs, then Franks reached his half-century off 80 balls with nine fours.

But he was caught behind by Luke Sutton in the next over as he got a top edge attempting to pull Kyle Hogg, who finished with figures of 1-52 from 26 overs. Adams creamed Hogg through the covers for four, but was caught at long-on by du Plessis off Smith to leave his side at 353-9.

Nottinghamshire had confirmed their fourth batting bonus point and Lancashire their third bowling bonus point just within the 120 overs allocated for bonus points. And the Trent Bridge side should have been bowled out just before lunch because Ryan Sidebottom survived a simple catch to Steven Croft at mid-on off the bowling of Oliver Newby.

Sidebottom was eleven not out, while Luke Fletcher was unbeaten on eight. Newby finished with the pick of the Lancashire bowling analysis with 3-98 from 29 overs.
