Lancs claim comfortable draw

Lancashire comfortably batted out the final two and a bit sessions to ensure a LV County Championship draw against Yorkshire at Headingley, owing much to Mal Loye's unbeaten 84 and VVS Laxman's 65 not out.

Loye, who also hit 146 against the White Rose county at Old Trafford earlier this month, shared an unbroken third wicket partnership of 131 to help their side to 196-2 declared when the players shook hands at 4.50pm.

Lancashire claimed three wickets this morning as Yorkshire batted their way to 429 all out – a first innings lead of 153 – with left-arm spinner Gary Keedy taking two of them, and leg-spinner Francois du Plessis the other.

But they could not prevent England one-day man Adil Rashid completing a superb unbeaten 157 off 239 balls – his second successive ton after one against Hampshire at Basingstoke last week.

It meant that Yorkshire had a minimum of 81 overs to force the victory, but they were hampered by a couple of dropped catches before the lunch break.

"It was a day where we had to battle hard, and we knew whoever got in had to stay in and make sure we didn't have a dodgy hour or so," said Loye, who faced 191 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes. "It was a tough day yesterday in the field, but we have fought hard to get the draw."

Tim Bresnan had taken the early wicket of makeshift opener Steven Croft, caught behind by Gerard Brophy for 15. But the all-rounder was frustrated when Paul Horton was dropped by Joe Sayers on nine at second slip, and Loye dropped by Jonny Bairstow at mid-wicket on two in the same over.

Loye and Horton (28) shared 42 for the second wicket before Horton was not so lucky, edging leg-spinner Rashid through to Brophy to leave the visitors at 65-2 early in the afternoon session.

Loye cracked Rashid for a straight six before he slog-swept left-arm spinner David Wainwright for a maximum. He brought up his 50 off 117 balls, while Laxman later reached his fourth score of 50 or above in five matches, finishing on 65 not out off 113 balls including seven fours.

Earlier, Ajmal Shahzad was the first Yorkshire wicket to fall this morning when his reverse sweep off du Plessis was caught by Loye at backward point for 32, just after he and Rashid had confirmed their century partnership for the eighth wicket.

Wainwright soon followed shortly afterwards as he was stumped by Luke Sutton off Keedy, and the left-armer completed Yorkshire’s first innings when Matthew Hoggard was caught at backward point by a diving Horton.
