Lancs endure frustrating day

Lancashire and Sussex were frustrated by the elements again at Hove today as the third day of their County Championship match was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a wet outfield.

Conditions underfoot have improved at the South Coast venue, helped by a dry and sunny day today, but unfortunately not enough to warrant any play. Umpires Mark Benson and Nick Cook, however, are hopeful of some play during tomorrow's fourth day given dry conditions between now and 11am.

There are a number of problem areas on the outfield where Sussex skipper Michael Yardy described them as "spongy", most notably the bowler's run-up at the Sea End of the ground. Many of the locals, whether they be players, coaches, groundsmen or spectators, even say they have never seen conditions as bad here.

Reflecting on the conditions and looking ahead to tomorrow's fourth and final day, Red Rose captain Glen Chapple said: "Our aim is to get points and have a competitive game of cricket. It's the umpires call on whether it's fit for cricket and whether it's safe. I think that's the issue at the moment. We keep coming out hoping that it's turned a corner. It's been a good drying day as well, but obviously not quite yet.

"Naturally you're going to have to try and pick up as many points as you can. Bowling points come quicker than batting points. It actually looks a good pitch, so I think both teams will be confident to have a bat on it. We'll just have to wait and see. The main thing is that it improves overnight, which hopefully it will."
