Lancs through to final after Essex victory

Lancashire Lightning made it through to the showpiece final of the Barbados Twenty20 Cricket Cup courtesy of a commanding 36-run victory over county rivals Essex Eagles at the Kensington Oval tonight.

The Red Rose will play the University of the West Indies XI, who have already beaten Yorkshire and Barbados this weekend, at 10pm UK time.

Mark Chilton was deputising for skipper Glen Chapple, who took a bang on the hand on Saturday, and his side amassed 147-5 from their 20 overs thanks to Steven Croft’s 52 off 45 balls.

Croft and Luke Sutton shared a fifth wicket partnership 64 in 8.1 overs. Paul Horton had earlier walloped 36 off 23 balls, including six fours and one six.

Lancashire’s total was the highest of the weekend at this venue, and Essex rarely threatened it. Captain Mark Pettini cracked 22 off 12 balls, and helped his side reached 32-1 in the eighth over, but that was as good as it good for the Eagles.

Left-arm spinners Gary Keedy and Stephen Parry later put the skids under the Chelmsford side’s chase, taking three wickets in four overs to reduce the score to 62-5 in the tenth.

Sajid Mahmood claimed the wickets of Pettini, David Masters and Maurice Chambers in a fierce burst, and finished with the pick of the figures (3-11 from 3.1), while Keedy finished with 3-17 from three and Tom Smith 2-17 from three.
