Mahmood brace in rain hit Pro40 return

Mahmood brace in rain hit Pro40 return

Sajid Mahmood celebrated his return to Lancashire's first team by taking two for 15 in 5.1 overs against Middlesex in Wednesday's NatWest Pro40 match at Lord's

but there was frustration for both sides when heavy rain forced the abandonment of the Division Two clash after the home side had scored 112 for three in 26.1 overs.

The 28-year-old fast bowler was playing his first game since being sidelined with an intercostal muscle injury on August 4th and he dismissed Dawid Malan, caught at square-leg by Steven Croft, and Neil Dexter, pouched at cover by stand-in skipper Mark Chilton, as the league leaders struggled to 28 for two after eight overs.

But the in-form Middlesex opener Nick Compton was joined by the former Lancashire junior John Simpson and this pair had added 52 for the third wicket before Simpson, having made a polished 22 in 31 balls, was beaten in the flight by Stephen Parry and stumped by Gareth Cross, his onetime rival for a wicketkeeper's berth at Old Trafford.

Parry finished with figures of one for 25 in seven overs and his display confirmed the progress the 23-year-old slow left-armer has made this summer.

Compton hit five fours in his 52 not out and had added 32 for the fourth wicket with Gareth Berg when the showers which had circled Lord's all afternoon finally merged into a spell of heavy rain which never relented sufficently to allow  a resumption.

Lancashire take one point from the "no result" at Lord's, an outcome which leaves the Old Trafford side still in third place in the Division Two table, two points behind  pacesetters Middlesex but with a game in hand on the leaders.
