Roses washout at Old Trafford

Roses washout at Old Trafford

To no one's surprise heavy rain prevented any play in Friday's evening's floodlit Friends Life t20 match between Lancashire Lightning and Yorkshire Carnegie at Old Trafford.

After a day in which the downpours had barely ceased in Manchester and with the weather forecast offering few reasons for cheerfulness, umpires Steve Garratt and Steve O'Shaughnessy had no option but to abandon any hope of play in the short-form Roses match. Their 4.30 inspection merely confirmed a conclusion which a scattering of media folk had already reached for themselves.
The washout is another blow to Lightning's hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals. Glen Chapple's side must now win at Durham on Sunday and hope that results in the other two groups go their way.
"Tonight was a massive game and the lads were keen to play in front of a full house at Old Trafford, especially against Yorkshire," said all-rounder Tom Smith. "But it's been one of those summers and there's nothing you can do about that."
"Our job as players is to prepare hard and train and put the performances in when we got on the pitch. That's what we try and do and we just have to forget about the rain."
Friday's abandonment is the second home t20 match Lancashire have lost to the weather this summer, but the matches at both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were also seriously affected by the weather.
"Everyone was really excited tonight, partly because they were opening the new stand, but unfortunately the rain's put an end to it," said Smith, as other members of Lancashire's squad made their way noisily down the stairs to the indoor nets.
