Lancashire County Cricket Club has been saddened to learn of the death of former player Roy Tattersall at the age of 89
The former off spin bowler was a vital member of the Lancashire team that won the County Championship in 1950, sharing the title with Surrey, and in a superb season he took 193 wickets at an average of only 13.59. His performances led to selection for England, and he played 16 Tests between 1951-54 making his debut against Australia at Adelaide.
He was named the Cricket Writers' Young Player of the Year in that title-winning season, and took 1168 wickets at an average of 17.39 for Lancashire in a career of 277 first-class games for the county between 1948-60.
Journalist Paul Edwards met Roy shortly before Lancashire's title success this year, to talk about that 1950 team, and his interview is featured in the new edition of our Lancashire Spin magazine, published this week. Roy was thrilled to contribute the foreword to the recently released Champions book on the 2011 season and was surprised to learn that his figures of 9-40 against Notts in 1953 had not been equalled until Simon Kerrigan's nine-wicket haul this season.
Roy kept in touch with the club and his friends and former colleagues at Old Trafford and was, for a number of years, the President of Lancashire's Former Players Association.
He will be greatly missed by everyone at Old Trafford, and our condolences go to his family and friends.
