We have a great summer of International cricket to look forward to at Emirates Old Trafford in 2014.
One fixture which promises to be a thriller is when England take on Sri Lanka in the 3rd Royal London One-Day International on Wednesday 28th May.
The last encounter between these two sides which took place at the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club was in 2011. The game ended with a nail-biting finish as England narrowly claimed the series victory in the penultimate over of the game. The 2014 fixture looks to be no different, as both sides have much to prove.
Lasith Malinga was kept very quiet by the England batsmen and didn’t take a single wicket in the game. England’s highest scoring batsman, Jonathon Trott hit a patient 72 before being clean bowled by Sri Lanka’s Randiv, who finished the innings with five wickets to his name. England completed their innings on a respectable total of 268.
The hosts started superbly with the ball as Tim Bresnan bowled debutant Karunaratne and Captain Dilshan for just 4 runs each. Sri Lanka’s highest scorer Angelo Mathews contributed 62 runs, but couldn’t see the game out and the visitors fell short of the winning target of 268 by 16 runs.
England beat Sri Lanka 3-2 in the 2011 ODI series, and the team will be hoping to have another successful campaign later this year.
Sri Lanka had a mixed 2013 with regards to their ODI campaigns, with 14 wins and 13 losses. Their leading run scorer in was Kumar Sangakkara with 1201 runs in 23 innings, at an average of 63.21. Their leading wicket taker was the outstanding Malinga, who took 39 wickets in 29 matches at an average of 30.15. If the aforementioned players are on form this summer, it is set to be a very exciting challenge for the Three Lions!
