Smith returns to YB40 squad

Tom Smith is included in a 14-man squad for Lancashire Lightning's Yorkshire Bank 40 match against Essex at Chelmsford on Sunday.

Smith's season has been dogged by injuriy, but the all-rounder has returning to action sucessfully and enjoyed a good week with the 2ndXI scoring 72 and taking seven wickets against Warwickshire while his colleagues were involved in that amazing result at Chelmsford.

Lancashire Lightning squad: Glen Chapple (capt), Karl Brown, Jordan Clark, Steven Croft, Gareth Cross (wkt), Kyle Hogg, Kabir Ali, Smon Katich, Simon Kerrigan, Stephen Moore, Stephen Parry, Ashwell Prince, Tom Smith, Wayne White.

Essex Eagles squad: Hamish Rutherford, Tom Westley, Mark Pettini, Owais Shah, Ryan ten Doeschate, James Foster (capt/wkt), Graham Napier, Sajid Mahmood, David Masters, Reece Topley, Tymal Mills, Tom Craddock, Tim Phillips.

Overseas star Simon Katich is backing Lancashire to come good when it really counts in the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition, starting with Sunday's clash with Essex Eagles at Chelmsford. The Lightning, who sit second bottom in the table, head into this fixture with little room for manoeuvre in Group B having lost three of their first six matches, although they are only three points behind table-topping Essex.

But they know that two wins in three days against Essex and Scotland under lights at Emirates Old Trafford on Tuesday will leave the picture looking a whole lot brighter before the break for the Friends Life t20, especially having beaten Surrey at Guildford last week.

The win over Surrey included a match-clinching 57 off 37 balls from Katich in the visitors' pursuit of 265.

It has been said more than once over the last week or so that with only one team guaranteed a place in September's semi-finals, the Lightning can ill-afford another slip up in the near future.

Whether they are quite in the last chance saloon yet is unclear, but they are certainly not far off.

And the Australian said: "Hopefully that pressure will bring out the best in us. It did last week, and hopefully it will this week as well. Last weekend's game should give us a lot of confidence in that format."

Katich was speaking after the stunning LV= County Championship win over Essex inside three days, with the hosts bowled out for just 20 in their second innings between lunch and tea.

The way things went in that 68 minutes of mayhem begged the question of what effect would it have on this YB40 clash - Lancashire will surely be buoyant and Essex on their knees after their worst batting display in first-class cricket.

But Katich is urging his team-mates not to get ahead of themselves.

"It's a totally different form of the game. We have to start all over again," he said. "One thing the Championship match did do was give us an idea of what to expect from the conditions. But, as I said, we have to start from scratch again."

Essex have won four and lost two of their six YB40 matches this summer, including a thumping win over Surrey at Chelmsford when Graham Napier took four wickets in four balls and seven in the match.

You do not have to look back too far in the history books to find Lancashire's last 40-over win on this ground. It came last August when the Lightning won by eight wickets in their pursuit of 187 after Oliver Newby's five wickets had helped bowl the hosts out.

Karl Brown and Steven Croft, who hit 87 and 66 respectively, shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 120 to seal the points.
