Trafford has been announced as Europe's third fastest growing tourist destination by Trip Advisor.
The results, which were calculated by the year-on-year increase in searches on the travel website, also placed Salford in seventh place and Warrington in eighth.
Deputy Leader of Trafford Council, Alex Williams hailed Lancashire County Cricket Club as one of the contributing factors to the borough’s upsurge of interest.
Williams said: "This latest recognition reinforces the fact that, whether it is our internationally recognised sporting pedigree, including the world famous Old Trafford Football Club and Old Trafford cricket ground, our rich mix of cultural, leisure and shopping opportunities or our outstanding parks and green spaces including Dunham Massey, Trafford really does have something for everyone.
“2012 is a huge year. Not only will Trafford be hosting the Greater Manchester Marathon in the Borough, but Trafford is also a Host Borough for the London 2012 Olympic games. Nine of the football matches will take place here, including the first of the Men's GB matches.
“Following on, 2013 sees the return of The Ashes to Lancashire County Cricket Club, currently undergoing a multi-million pound Council facilitated, privately-funded regeneration.
“With the on-going development of The Quays area, the continuing popularity of the award-winning Imperial War Museum North, and our excellent, attractive town and village centres, Trafford is a tourist destination for all seasons and all ages. We look forward to welcoming even more visitors to Trafford over the coming months and years."
