Profile

Andrea Agathangelou arrived at Lancashire at the start of the 2010 summer on a scholarship deal, signing his first professional contract with the club a year later after a string of impressive performances in the second XI.

A multi-dimensional cricketer, Agathangelou will be aged 23 by the time the 2013 season begins.

He can bat, bowl and keep wicket, also demonstrating the ability to catch flies in the slips during his Lancashire first-class debut at Oxford University, taking four catches as the 2011 season opener finished in a draw.

In fact, assistant coach Gary Yates even described him as the best slip catcher in Lancashire's squad prior to the Championship winning campaign. And, while Paul Horton may have something to say about that, it gives you an idea of his capabilities.

Born in Rustenburg, South Africa, he holds a Cypriot passport due to his father's heritage. Although his mother is from the Rainbow nation, he sees himself as a Cypriot. He is believed to be the first from that country to ever play county cricket.

Preferring to bat in the top three - quite happy to open - the right-hander has played provincial cricket in South Africa for the North West team. He has also been capped by South Africa under 19s.

He made his competitive debut for Lancashire in the LV= County Championship match against Somerset at Liverpool in August 2012, going on to play three times during the most recent summer, scoring 36 in three innings. Nicknamed Aggers, he has yet to make his limited overs bow for the Red Rose.

In his own words, he is "a stroke-player with a good technique", while he can "rotate it well off spin and can bat for a long period of time".

He has a first-class average just shy of 35, with a career best 158 and three other centuries to his name.

Agathangelou turned heads during a second XI four-day friendly against Somerset at Southport in 2010, taking 4-34 in the first innings, 6-90 in the second with his leg-spin, scoring 129 and 70 not out from number three in the order to boot.

And there is every chance that he will turn a few more heads in years to come in a Red Rose shirt, with Agathangelou currently midway through a four-year qualification period to become English qualified.
